MSN 7.5: Microsoft’s Latest and Greatest Failure

Sunday, November 20th, 2005

Has anyone else noticed that the latest releases of MSN have gone from bad to worse? I mean, for one of the most widely used instant messaging clients in the world, this is one buggy piece of shi–software. It used to be that MSN would randomly kick me offline for no reason at a varying frequency, as well as crash if someone sent me too many emoticons at once. These complications were, although not ideal, bearable. Then MSN started supporting video conversations, which was cool, except that they only worked half the time, and if I attempted to start one with my webcam unplugged MSN would go Kamikaze.

However, with MSN 7.5, I get all the old bugs AND MORE. When I use the alt+tab shortcut to flip between MSN 7.5 windows and other programs, MSN 7.5 likes to bring into the foreground a seemingly random number of its windows, along with the one that I actually wanted; that’s a fun trick. MSN now gives me a good 2-10 minute delay on “noticing” that contacts have gone offline. I could write a novella to one of my friends before MSN says, “Oops, they were offline the whole time! Sorry; my bad!” (more…)
