Mixed Feelings about Facebook

Monday, October 2nd, 2006

When facebook first introduced feeds and “mini-feeds”. I—-Like so many people—–was very disappointed by how in-your-face-reporting-stuff-you-don’t-care-about it was. However, when Mark Zuckerberg wrote a personal letter of apology that outlined what was being done to make sure that feeds would be altered to serve his community better, I gained a lot of respect for the guy.

On the other hand, Facebook recently opened the gates to the public (as apposed to schools and select companies). Zuckerberg promised that there would be no problems, and no additional ads. To be fair, I haven’t seen MORE ads on Facebook, but it loads noticably slower now, and I’ll be damned if my browser isn’t always waiting on servedby.advertising.com while I wait. Now, there’s even talk that Yahoo! wants to buy Facebook. This would be especially disappointing. Facebook’s main attraction was close, personal feeling community site. Don’t sell out, Mark, and get faster/more servers. I want to keep loving facebook, but facebook has to keep loving me.

The Worst Product Ever Made

Waste of time

What you see above is the worst thought to ever pass through a marketer’s head. GladeĀ® PlugInsĀ®, which waste electricity while serving the purpose of potpourri, now come with a neon light show that serves absolutely not purpose. My best guess for this one is that the neon lights are supposed to be “soothing colours”. I would normally properly link a product that I blog about, but for your sake, I hope this is the last time you set your sight on this waste of perfectly good materials.

Blog Services: Insourcing Vs. Outsourcing

Friday, August 25th, 2006

When every tech-savvy blogger gets bored, whether (s)he’s has run out of addictive 2-D games to play or governments to exploit, (s)he inevitably ends up surfing around, searching for new features and gizmos to spice the old blog.

So, pictures this: you’re surfing the net when you come across a blogging tool you haven’t tried yet, at least, you don’t think. So, you attend the flashy Web 2.0 site for this great service, and you decide this looks pretty good, so you sign up for an account. Then, as you’re integrating your new favourite service, you come across what looks to be the same deal in your Blogger/Movable Type/Wordpress/MySpace/Live Journal (”Blog”) Dashboard. (more…)

Back in Blacion!

Friday, August 25th, 2006

After four months back in school/under a rock, I’ve finally got time to breathe/blog again! It seems a lot has happened since I was away. Xfruits came into fruition, one of my blog communities kicked the bucket, Microsoft started public testing of the purpetual beta Longhorn Windows Vista, RIM bought out my last coop placement, and Bush found a new avenue for military spending. Oh well, you win some, you lose some.

In any case, I hope to enjoy at least another four months of mean verbal diarrhea before I head back to the Land of the Damned. Now if I can just stop playing with blog plugins, themes, add-ons, services and widgets; and actually write something in the damn thing, I’ll be good to go.
